    Petzl LED headlamps

Petzl is a manufacturer of at-height work equipment, climbing gear, caving gear, and headlamps based in Crolles, France. The company was found by Fernand Petzl, the cave explorer, around the mid of 1970s. Petzl was the first manufacturer that utilize LED (light-emitting diode) technology in their headlamps, resulting in more battery efficient headlamps. This LED technology was subsequently adopted by many other flashlight and headlamps manufacturers in the outdoor industry.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy, Sturdy, Bright   June 26, 2010

The first thing I noticed when picking up this Garrity KM200GST06A LED Pen Light is how heavy it feels. In fact, it weights about twice as much as similar 2xAAA pen lights such as Energizer Aluminum Pen LED Flashlight (PLED23AE) and Dorcy 41-1218 5MM LED Pen Light.

The body of this Garrity LED pen light is made of extra thick stainless steel, instead of aluminum. It is so sturdy that I can step on it without making a dent. This heavy-duty construction makes it less comfortable to carry around in my shirt pocket. But it makes a good addition to my toolbox, or as a glove-compartment flash light.

The brightness of the LED is very impressive for a 2xAAA pen light. The beam it creates is relatively wide, throwing a 5 ft diameter circle at a distance of 12 ft. This makes it suitable for short range illumination only. The Nichia LED is indeed 'twice as bright' as advertised, at least in comparison to other 2xAAA pen light I have tested (Energizer and Dorcy). The downside is that it also consumes over twice the power, resulting in much shorter run time.

The power regulation of this pen light is quite good. Battery current is maintained at around 250mA throughout most of the battery voltage range (from 3.0V down to 1.5V). This corresponds to input power of roughly 800mW down to 400mW. I have tested the run time using two 800mAh NiMH AAA cells. For the first three hours, the light was consistently bright. After 3 hour 15 minutes the light started to dim down, and it continued to glow pass 4-hour mark. In comparison, the Energizer and Dorcy pen lights can burn for over 10 hours. But it is interesting to note that, even when powered by just one AAA cell, this Garrity light is still brighter than the other two. (See my Customer Image for brightness comparison)

One thing to watch out for: the battery compartment cap needs to be tightened all the way, in order for the light to work. Initially I almost thought my unit was defective, just because the cap was not making electrical contact with the body. This seems to be the problem another reviewer encountered.

For the price I paid for this Garrity LED pen light (less than $7 each), it is a great value. I only wish it can be made a bit lighter.

3 out of 5 stars Almost, but...   December 11, 2009

This flashlight has one of those magnifier lenses in front of the LED. I can't stress enough that this is not a good idea. The flashlight would actually be brighter without it, which you can see in this model by removing the nose cap.

The only possible benefit to such a lens is to reduce peripheral light. In most cases this is a drawback, not a benefit. Some military flashlights block out peripheral light to avoid detection (or to avoid annoying others). Dive flashlights also sometimes do this, to avoid glare in murky water.

This flashlight is not even designed well to do that. The nose piece lets some light through sideways, and the lens is not properly positioned to produce the perfect circular beam. So you still get side-emitted light, but you also have the effect of reduced total output. The beam doesn't even look cool, which is normally a non-functional benefit to a magnifier lens, because the lens is too close to the LED.

The clicker switch is good.

The nose cap is not so good. The removable piece is actually two parts glued together (to allow the lens to be inserted during assembly), and the threaded part is narrower than you might expect, about half the diameter of the body tube it screws into. It doesn't look like a durable setup.

I really just bought this flashlight because I liked the appearance. But Dorcy makes a 2AAA penlight which is better.

1 out of 5 stars Wow... a disposable lasted longer...   March 18, 2010

I bought two of these for the heathcare field. BOTH of my lights failed, 1 month after purchase, using them ZERO times.

I have them stored to be used later and both lights failed. They keep the batteries powered and suck juice and fail.

What is the point of a 500 hour LED if it never works. Get a Mag or stick with the disposables here on Amazon.

Poor quality, not worth the cost for the lack of reliability.
