I was skeptical about the product description of this item (Rayovac BRSLED2AA-B Bright Solutions LED Rubberized Flashlight): how can a 2-AA flashlight be 'Super bright' and yet last for '70 Hours of battery run time'?

As it turns out, the light output from this little flashlight is quite bright - at least when using a fresh pair of alkaline AA cells. It is between a typical 2-D incandescent flashlight and a 2-AA pen lightt, while consuming only a fraction of the current (66mA instead of 500mA). The bright spot it produces is very uniform, with a relatively wide spread (3 ft diameter at a distance of 12 ft). This wide spread makes it suitable for short-distance illumination, but not so useful for long range.

The problem is that: power of this LED flashlight is not well-regulated. It drops rapidly with lower battery voltage (see my Customer Image for the chart of 'input power vs. battery voltage').

- At 3V battery input, the current consumption is 66mA, which means input power of 200mW.
- When battery voltage drops to 2.5V, the current drops to just 40mA. Now the input power is only 100mW, so the LED is only half as bright.

It may be true that this LED flashlight can run up to 70 hours on a pair of AA alkaline cells. However, only the first 15-20 hour can be marginally called 'super bright'. During the remaining 50 hours, the light will gradually dim down to the point of 'barely visible'.

On the positive side, the rubberized body of this flashlight is very comfortable to grip, and seems reasonably sturdy. Of course, it cannot compare to a MAGLITE Mini LED Flashlight in terms of brightness and ruggedness. But at 1/3 the price, I consider it a reasonable value. Just remember that: no matter which flashlight you pick, there is always trade-off between 'brightness' and 'battery life'.
