9 levels of light, rechargable single battery, or CR123 use - excellent! April 15, 2010 HMMWV (santa clara, CA USA) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RKGJJ72V9GJ03 Video update: - over in the discussion on the TK40 and TK30, I included a photo of the TA21 with those two lights for comparison. All 3 lights were set to maximum (9 on the TA21) and all had new, freshly charged batteries. In order to show the color difference they were shot with a still camera stopped down because the video camera was overexposing the lights at night and did not have the exposure range of the still camera. The video is thus effectively a 3 minute slideshow comparing the TA21, TK30, and TK40.
Going from 4 lumens and 190 hours of runtime up to 225 lumens and 90 or so minutes of runtime from a rechargable battery is a great combination. With 9 power levels and flashing either disorienting or s-o-s or a simple on/off flash you have a very flexible system.
This uses the 18650 li-ion rechargable battery which is used in many packs for laptops. It's $4 and packs a whollop of power in a small cell. Compared to tossing CR123's in the trash it's a no brainer. A CR-123 is 1400 mAh and a 18650 is 2600 - 3000 mAh capactity - nearly double so it's a big deal.
The size is nice and there is a clip to hold it in your pocket. Yes, it is larger than a sure-fire E2d but its packed with features you wont find elsewhere, unfortunately not even in surefire's catalog.
BTW - for those who wonder how the 18650 cell got its name, think of it like an A cell but they quit using letters for li-ion and use numbers in the XXYYY format. XX is the diameter of the cell in millimeters, and YYY is the length to one decimal digit (eg 650 means 65.0 mm, 425 would be 42.5 mm long) so all the numbers do is give you the cell's diameter and length. Many of these li-ion cells lack a button top like AA batts have, so your flashlight must be made for them, usually by putting springs on both ends. To protect the li-ion reputation Tenergy has invented a printed circuit board that prevents over discharge or overcharge, both of which can lead to fire, and is held in place in the negative end giving a gold bottom to their 2600 mah cell. Now you know the details of how li-ion cells are specified.
Brilliant! October 29, 2009 J. Clarke (Los Angeles, CA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have a Surefire L4 that puts out around 120 Lumens which I thought was bright, but the TA21 at 225 Lumens is TWICE as bright in my informal night time comparisons. The TA21 is very sturdy and has go features such as a no roll bezel, a sturdy clip positioned to act as a finger grip not to mention the 12 levels of out put. It comes with a lanyard and extra gaskets, but no batteries(?).
I will probably use the lower output for trail walking as it gets dark just to see the trail while maintaining some night vision. The bright strobe is definitely blinding and could be used for defensive purposes. The high spot setting #11 is INTENSE.
Adventurers might have use for the SOS or slow beacon features. It is truly a versatile light.
You should know: This is a big light for a cr123 type. It is 16.5 cm/6 5/8" long and 3cm/ 13/8" wide at the lens. Or, about twice the size of the Surefire L4 Luamax L$. Thus, it is not a good pocket light, more of a jacket carry light.
Overall, this is a great light, you won't be disappointed if you buy it.
Best Overall Light July 27, 2009 Brandon M. Rawles (CA USA) 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is the best flashlight I have purchased to date. I have several flashlights such as the surefire g2 and surefire g2 led (also with R2 lamp upgrade) as well as a 220 lumen dorcy and many others, but none compare to this one! The 12 output modes may seem like a lot at first but you'll soon realize why Fenix chose to incorporate all these modes. It allows you to get the best output with the most runtime depending on what situation you are using the light for. This light performs exactly as advertised. Its a great beam thrower as well as flood light. Brighter that my g2 with led upgrade and runs longer too! I have tested it on a 17670 [1600mah] rechargeable lithim ion battery from AW (similar to 18650) and have confirmed that it will run exactly 1.5 hours on full power(225 Lumens)!!! It will actually last longer however after the 1.5 hour mark it will fall out of regulation and drop to the 50 lumen setting which is still good useable light. Like I said outperforms every light I have in brightness, runtime, and durability. The rotating dial for the output modes is a must! Its easy and way better than pushing the same button over and over on other lights. Pocket clip is great, holds well but not too tight. Love the body style and tac look on this light! The only thing I don't like is the clicky noise when you switch outputs and on the tailcap but I can live with that. If your on the edge about whether to buy this or another light buy this!!! You Won't regret it!
Great flashlight! January 28, 2010 J. Ellenberger (Pennsylvania) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is one bright flash light, I am very happy that I decided to go with the Fenix TA21. The dial feature works great and you do not have to push the on off button multiple time to get different brightnesses like you do with other flashlights. I have a coast led lenser that I bought at Lowes and thought it was a bright light until I bought this one. Another thing I like is that there is no dead spot in the center of the beam. And the bad review by Kelly Grant should not be posted here. I also ordered this light from 'Outfitter Country' and also recieved the TK12 and I just emailed them and they said to ship it back and they would replace it and refund my shipping cost. So I did just that and they shipped out the TA21 that I ordered and an extra set of batteries to offset the shipping charges. They were easy to deal with and they fixed the problem for me. But all in all I recommend this product!
Great flashlight March 12, 2010 pj (Nevada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a very impressive flashlight. It has more settings than I understand the need for, but very cool nonetheless. I really like the strike bezel feature, it makes the flashlight a credible self defense tool should the need ever arise. The clip is a nice feature as well. I highly recommend this flashlight. I thought I had a nice flashlight from Lowe's....it has 7 LED lights, but when I compare the 2 side by side there is really no comparison. The Fenix blows it away (of course it also costs 5 times more!).
